Although in common parlance are used interchangeably, we give some differences, it is common that are consecrated to God.
- A "nun" is a woman who belongs to the so-called monastic orders. He felt the call to live a contemplative life of prayer in a monastery, a monastery or a convent. His life is known as contemplative.
- The nun made solemn vows, public, temporary or perpetual chastity, poverty and obedience and also vote closing.
- Viven and work in the monastery and recite a common Office, divine office or "Liturgy of the Hours".
- They are living the monastic enclosure, and enclosed space designated for them. The closure is intended to maintain a climate of meditation, silence, prayer and other ascetics resources to the pursuit of mystical union with God. They are also popularly called "nuns".
- Among the religious orders who practice monastic cloistered life at present we have as examples: the Benedictines, Carmelites, Carthusians, Cistercians, jerónimos, Trappists, among others (in the case of communities of men), and the Augustinian nuns , Benedictines, Carmelites, Poor Clares, cartujas, concepcionistas, Jerónimas, minimum, ... among others in the communities of women.
- A nun who holds the position of "superior" is called Abbess.
A religious,
- She is a woman who belongs to a Congregation or religious institute whose apostolic charism is considered "active". That is, that although she and her community pray also help the Church by other means.
- Religious makes simple, public, temporary or perpetual vows of chastity, poverty and obedience.
- The mission of religious institutes is to meet in today's world the program of life that Jesus brought; his dedication, his sacrifice, his proclamation of the kingdom of God, His love ...
- There are congregations who perform the most varied activities. Each religious institute carries out specific hers, including social work, education, nursing, pastoral care, missionary work, work with media, eldercare
